Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders. The essential feature of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development. It is estimated that about 5% percent of the population suffer from ADHD. Symptoms are noticeable starting at kindergarten or lower grades of elementary school.
Many people associate Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity as a disorder exclusively suffered by children. But, in fact, many continue to struggle with this disorder well into adulthood. Recent studies showed that between 30 to 70 percent of children with ADHD continue to experience symptoms of the disorder in adulthood. Many adults with ADHD are without diagnosis, and have limited awareness that the difficulty they experience in organization, concentration, and punctuality are due to ADHD.
It is important to diagnose ADHD when suspect rises. Living with ADHD without knowing it is usually extremely frustrating and might be an obstacle from realizing full potential. Proper knowledge of attention abilities might improve well-being and quality of life.
A complete diagnosis of ADHD should include different sources of information. Including clinical assessment, inspection of performance in different contexts such as home, school, work, social interaction, collection of self/parent/teacher reports via questionnaires, and direct examination of attention capabilities via standard behavioral tasks. The most commonly used behavioral measure is the CPT – Continues Performance Test.
An important aspect of ADHD diagnosis is direct examination of attentional capabilities, persistence, and impulsiveness. CPT tasks are uninteresting and monotonous, and they challenge concentration attentiveness, and impulsivity for an extended period of time. A reliable CPT usually takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Recently, researchers developed a new opportunity for online assessments that include two out of the four components need to assess ADHD.
